Palestinian students at the Institute of Journalism and Information Science find a problem in the management of their French courses at the university, and some Palestinian students see this as due to the presence of French academic subjects in many courses at the university.
Every year, the Institute of Press and Information Sciences welcomes Palestinian students to study and they find many problems concerning the French language due to its absence in their programmes in Palestine. The Union of Palestinian Students in Tunisia has stated that in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education in Tunisia, we send new students to the Bourguiba Language Institute every year. While some students questioned the ability of one year to meet the pedagogical requirements, the administration of the Press Institute said that every year we provide facilities to students to ensure their success in subjects that require mastery of the French language.
Palestinian students at the Institute of Journalism and Information Science find a problem in the management of their French courses at the university, and some Palestinian students see this as due to the presence of academic subjects in French in many courses at the university.
We are trying our best to help.
Ahmed Huwaihi, secretary of the Palestinian Students' Union in Tunis, said that as a union of Palestinian students, they were fully aware that there is no French language subject in the Palestinian curriculum except in some public schools. Therefore, the Palestinian Students' Union has agreed with the University of Tunis al-Manar to integrate new Palestinian students into the system. Education in Tunisia by giving them intensive courses in their first year in Tunisia..
As for students who have completed their year at the Bourguiba Institute for Modern Languages and have joined the Institute of Press and Information Sciences and are still facing problems in French, the Union is trying to contact the university administration to convert academic subjects in French into English. The fact that our second language in Palestine is English, so we have been able to convert the translation material into English instead of French at the Institute of Journalism and Information Science and also convert the language of some other subjects. Like acting and advertising.
One year of training is not enough
Ibrahim Al-Jazzar, one of the students at the Institute of Journalism, said that studying abroad has advantages such as a new experience and learning about self-accreditation. As for the difficulties he encountered while studying at the university, Al-Jazzar said he was surprised by the large amount of material offered in French and added that he had difficulty overcoming these subjects at the university.
And I would add that it is true that I studied French for a year at the Bourguiba Institute for Modern Languages, but that doesn't give me half the capacity of students who have studied in Tunisian schools.
And he added that the compulsory subjects are French language subjects, and that the student of these subjects at the Institute of Press and Information Sciences is two years old and because of the French language, he could not succeed like the rest of the students, but instead he had to succeed with the ambulance (and it should be noted that the ambulance regime meant that the student could not pass A total of 10 on average, but he got the minimum points he scored because of his success in other subjects) unlike the rest of my Tunisian students.
Al-Jazzar asked the university to help foreign students at least in the subject in French or to create special classes for them to learn the French language.
We provide support for students
Meanwhile, Hamida El-Bour, Director of the Institute of Press and Information Sciences, said :
Every student who registers at the Institute of Press and Information Sciences must have the knowledge that they can study - in certain subjects - in French, and this is a matter they must be aware of, but despite this, we always offer them facilities in terms of translation, for example, but it is not possible to do more than this because we do not do it. We can change the system because of a small number of students, but this is not called a major obstacle because there are students who have completed their studies up to the Master's level at the Institute of Press and Information Sciences .
When asked if there was a specific system of the Ministry that the university pursues in terms of subject development, she replied that this was not a matter for the Ministry as the programme is internal to the university as the programme is developed by the university and then approved by the Ministry.
It is normal for the Palestinian to be weak in French.
For her part, Mrs Rania Bouaziz, professor of Arabic language and translation at the Institute of Press and Information Sciences , said that it is natural for the Palestinian student to be weak in French even if they has studied that language for a year or two, so the Tunisian student starts studying the French language as early as his second year, and it is present in the Tunisian dialect, we distinguish easily that familiar language in Tunisian street is sprinkled with a few words of French.
